Bob Owens takes it from the top:
It was a horrible story.
Sharmeka Moffitt, who is black, claims she was walking in a park in Winnsboro, Louisiana, this past Sunday night about 8:00 PM when a group of three men in white hoodies doused her with a flammable liquid and set her on fire. She also claimed they wrote the letters KKK on her car and and a racial slur.
Except she did it all herself.
And she’ll live with this for the rest of her life. Not just the physical pain and discomfort. Not just the scars which everyone will wonder about about. Not just the nightmares which have probably already started. No, those are secondary.
She will also have to live with the knowledge that everyone–everyone–will be justified in never taking her words at face value. Nothing she can do from this point will absolve her (in the present, human sense) of punishment for the grave injustice she did to innocent people. When she allowed hatred to twist her thinking to the point where this all made sense and seemed right and good and just, she traded truth for falsehood and sold her birthright for 15 minutes of fame.
What a monstrous shame.
