Christmas Tree Tax (Updated)

This is foolishness:

President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.

We don’t need to improve the “image and marketing of Christmas trees”–we need to get government out of the business of supporting any area of commerce over another.  What’s next, a per-pound fee on all reindeer steaks?

And how come the Executive branch is levying a tax at all? Is that not the business of Congress?

Update

Obama administration does a BOA and pulls it:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is going to delay implementation and revisit a proposed new 15 cent feeon fresh-cut Christmas trees,  sources tell ABC News. The fee, requested by the National Christmas Tree Associationin 2009, was first announced in the Federal Registry yesterday and has generated criticism of President Obama from conservative media outlets.

Good.
