What Americans Want

Wants and needs are not always congruous. Anyone wanting to check the veracity of that statement merely needs to consider how much of their parents’ money tweens are spending on consumer electronics.

However, we are sometimes wanting the very things we need. Frank Luntz has been collecting some of that data for a very long time. Based on his data, here are the top three areas in which the electorate finds itself not getting what it wants:

  • Honesty–Politicians should “say what they mean and mean what they say.”
  • Accountability–This is the top complaint about government in general.
  • Appropriateness–“Government has grown too big, too inefficient, and too out of control to do even the bare minimum things it is supposed to do.”

Sounds to me as though the wants and needs might just be matching up this time.
