From the Hill:
Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-S.D.) scored a key endorsement from the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Tuesday.
The gun-rights group backed the embattled House Democrat for reelection, giving her key cover from a group that could otherwise threaten to swing the state’s voters to her Republican challenger.
“The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund supports Stephanie Herseth Sandlin because she has defended the Second Amendment freedoms of law-abiding gun owners, hunters and sportsmen in South Dakota and across America,” said NRA-PVF Chairman Chris W. Cox. “On November 2, I urge all South Dakota NRA Members and gun owners to vote Stephanie Herseth Sandlin for Congress.”
I’m an NRA member, Chairman Cox, and I will not be voting as directed. I understand the political calculus which causes you to state that we should back the current representative, but by focusing very narrowly on the single issue, I believe you miss the bigger point.
Speaker Pelosi will not be getting the nod from the NRA (unless you’ve gone off like an early season antelope which has been bouncing around in the back of a pickup for two days at 75 degrees F). However, Pelosi will be getting the nod from Herseth Sandlin if the Democrats manage to somehow hang on to the House of Representatives.
Kristi Noem’s position, as stated, is quite straightforward and should be music to your ears, Chairman Cox:
The Constitution guarantees the individual’s right to keep and bear arms. I am strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Hunting is a large part of our family heritage and I enjoy hunting with friends and family. My family also runs a hunting operation, so I know firsthand the economic importance hunting has in our state.
In the State Legislature, I sponsored the Firearms Freedom Act ensuring that firearms and ammunition manufactured and sold in South Dakota, and remain in South Dakota, are not subject to federal regulation. If elected to Congress, the first vote I will cast will be to fire Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House, who is not a friend of gun rights.
Barring an all but improbable upset of the proverbial apple cart, either Herseth Sandlin or Noem will be the next representative for the state of South Dakota. Superficially speaking, you win with either one, Mr. Cox. But, if you go a bit deeper, you would win more with Kristi Noem–since she’s not going to be BFF with Nancy Pelosi.
Why not bet on the horse that won’t kick you after the race?
Looks as though I’m not the only one to wonder what you were thinking, sir.
