Getting it Right on Reading

Came across the following from KOTA on the subject of books and children:

Some children in KOTA Territory are stripped of certain childhood memories by growing up in a home with no books.  But you can help provide them for those boys and girls by participating in the Readiatrics Book Drive from now until May.

Unsurprisingly, I am an advocate of reading. I encourage my own children and other children by reading to them and providing books for them to read from the time they are born.

With that said, it is important to understand that no child is “stripped of certain childhood memories” because they do not have books. They may be prevented from building certain memories, but they cannot lose what they do not have. This is like saying that I have been “stripped of the role of governor” though I’ve never had such a thing.

I understand the need for a lede that grabs the attention–if not the heartstrings–but this statement is entirely erroneous.
