Lincoln’s Thought
While my own thoughts on Abraham Lincoln and his legacy are rather mixed (glad he helped end slavery, not glad he expanded power of federal government at expense of states, etc) I find the following quote (via ivman’s blague) from him to be appropriate today:
The best way to get a bad law repealed is to enforce it strictly.
Of course, it increasingly appears as though laws are only strictly enforced when those in power seek to punish those who are their political opponents. That is, enforcement has become selective or even arbitrary.
Recently, while studying some cases which have been decided by the US Supreme Court, I was struck by a thought: what if the Executive and Legislative branches simply decided to ignore one or more decisions from the Supremes? Who is going to enforce anything?
In short, our current system is based on trust (not force). Let us do what we can to ensure that this state of affairs continues.
