One of the founders of Earth Day is Ira Einhorn. Here is part of his story which I’ve never run across before. It is far from a happy story.

What a tragic story! What a misapplication of conscience for someone to be deeply, even fanatically concerned about pollution, but to have no compunction about murdering his girlfriend.
