Arts Trump Cents

artI’ve nothing against “the arts,” as such. I’ve everything against using taxpayer monies to fund them. I’m sorry to say that South Dakota did not take this opportunity as a state in financial distress to dissolve this unnecessary taxpayer expense:

Funding for the arts in South Dakota is on its way to being saved from state budget cuts.

House Bill 1072, which includes $668,000 for the South Dakota Arts Council, passed in the House of Representatives this afternoon.

The bill, which also calls for an increase in the state’s tourist tax, passed in the Senate on Tuesday.

We are going to spend chump change (by DC standards) on this, but we are also going to charge people more for visiting? I’m too tired not say things which are far to harsh for the context, so I’ll quit.

One final thought: Governor Rounds has the power to veto this bill. I doubt he has the intestinal fortitude.
