1986 – 2009

Today is the 23rd anniversary of the implementation of the horribly named Firearm Owners’ Protection Act (or FOPA). (Just a brief aside here, but any time a bill has the term “protection” in its title, it is time to remember Newspeak and how words can mean the opposite of what you and I think.)

For a detailed run down of federal firearms law leading up to and including the FOPA, one could do worse than this article by David Hardy in the Cumberland Law Review (written in 1986). The author’s conclusions are dated, but the history lesson is good.
