South Dakota Says No to Change

Sometimes change is good. Sometimes it is not. South Dakotan’s yesterday didn’t really seem to care if they were voting against needful change or not, they just voted against change.

Secretary of State’s site for the following numbers:

  • President: No to change–53.16 to 44.75 (advantage McCain)
  • Senator: No to change–62.49 to 37.51 (advantage Johnson)
  • Representative: No to change–67.56 to 32.44 (advantage Herseth Sandlin)
  • Public Utilities Commissioner: No to change–64.92 to 31.57 and 3.51 (advantage Hanson)

Secretary of State’s site for the following numbers:

  • Amendment G: No to change–58.86 to 41.14 (5 cent per mile reimbursement remains)
  • Amendment H: No to change–69.02 to 30.98 (corporations laws remain unchanged)
  • Amendment I: Yes to making things the same–52.41 to 47.59 (make each year’s session 40 days)
  • Amendment J: No to change–75.73 to 24.27 (leave term limits in place)
  • Measure 9: No to change–56.61 to 43.39 (leave short selling alone)
  • Measure 10: No to change–64.68 to 35.32 (do not implement complex laws regarding conflicts of interest)
  • Measure 11: No to change–55.21 to 44.79 (do not ban nearly all abortions)

So, with the exception of the length of the legislative session, which I would argue was a vote for making things more the same, change of all sorts lost at the voting booth.

We will have to wait and see if South Dakota still wins as a result
