Doing My Part

One lovely Dodge Ram pickupWith GM, Ford, and Chrysler all down in DC begging for a bunch of my money, I figured it was time for me to step up and do what I could to alleviate the situation. I realize that I’m just one person, just a single (well, married) taxpayer who probably does not understand all of the complexities of the automaker’s situation with regards to unions, employees, stockholders, taxpayers, and unions. To my chagrin, I did not get to take all of those exciting courses in college which were referred to by my friends getting business degrees as simply “Micro” and “Macro.”

Despite all of that, I think maybe I can help. You see, I bought a truck from Chrysler a few years ago, and–based on an incentive at the time–financed with Chrysler Financial. Recently, my wife and I decided that we should simply pay off Chrysler Financial and have done with that regular monthly drain on discretionary spending. So, tomorrow, I will drop the very last check in the mail. Sometime on or around December 10, 2008, some Chrysler Financial employee (or computer scanner) will receive the check and my bank account will be immediately debited for the amount written thereupon.

Once again, I know that my payment may not mean much, as it might not do more than cover the toner which will probably be used to craft some crazy legislation for keeping Detroit alive, even though they’ve stopped breathing. However, it comes quite a bit earlier than Chrysler had orginally anticpated, so I’ve got to think that they are happy to get the use of their money that much sooner. I know that I’m happy to have settled my obligation. Here’s to payin’ the bills.

Good for you! We are glad that our steeds are paid for. We are very thankful that we have two. Since one is about ready to be put to pasture–old age is hard to repair when it comes to transmissions.

    Noelle,

Time to get moving and help out the big 3 then.

That will have to wait a while.(My husband would like to have a “smart” car to tool around in, but it isn’t a viable purchase at this time.) Now is not the time to wipe out one’s savings or significantly add to the monthly budget. Also since we buy good condition used cars (think Carmax), I don’t think we would make a dent in the big 3′s financial icebergs.
